How do we as a coffee community invested in ethical sourcing, ensure what we believe about our coffees is true?  Panelists: Falcon Coffee CEO Konrad Brits and head of Falcon Speciality Sales, Mike Riley.

The Smalls - Where the filmmakers are.....

The Smalls put the spotlight on great short films and give filmmakers the tools to create, share, and connect. Since 2006, The Smalls has been supporting and promoting up-and-coming artists through their site as well as with their inspiring live events.

Transforming the landscape of the short film 'industry' is not an easy task, but with the help of some pretty visionary people, brands, and organizations, The Smalls are connecting filmmakers more directly with the type of ventures that can drive their careers forward.

The Smalls launched in September 2006, with “Small Films for Small Screens”, a two-day showcase and competition in Covent Garden, London

After the success of Small Films for Small Screens, their website was conceived, and annual competitions such as The Comedy Smalls and The Smalls Showcase and Awards commenced. Over the years, The Smalls have seen the most random-yet-successful collaborations come to fruition, witnessed young comedic geniuses being snapped up by broadcasters and independent producers, observed audiences of hundreds go dead silent when faced with exceptional documentary material, and they have watched people cry like fountains when awarded their first production grant.

Eleven years on and still going strong, The Smalls Film Festival is back for 2016 and we are delighted to have them at Hackney House!

If you want to join us and our 15,000 strong community for the most dynamic week in the short film industry, put the 2nd-7th September in your diaries immediately. Still need convincing? You can watch our 2016 festival trailer here.

Submissions for the 2016 festival are now closed.

This Spring BL-NK has partnered up with Lumen to launch a permanent digital art exhibition in our first floor gallery. Over 6 screens the work of some of Lumen’s coolest artists from the last two years will be showcased. The 2015 Founder’s Prize winner Scott Draves will have you mesmerized with his work Electric Sheep. A generative work of art that can be installed on your phone, tablet or laptop, Electric Sheep, comes alive as your iOS or Andriod operating system ‘sleeps’. Here, you’ll be able to witness what happens when 450,000 computers come together to form one giant supercomputer. It’s the coolest screensaver you’ll ever see.

You’ll also be able to catch the audio-visual work of the Brazilian collective Altera. Their shortlisted work RHEOTAXIS places water at its center, capturing its natural movement by overlaying randomness, selection and design to produce what they term  ‘dynamic paintings’.

The exhibition is open daily in the first floor gallery + bar at BL-NK.

We’ll also be hosting Lumen’s 2016 Winners’ Gala on September 29th. This event will include an installation, artist talks and the distribution of an $11,000 prize fund to artists working in categories such as Interactive Art, Mixed-Reality and Moving Image.

Find all the 2015 Lumen winners and shortlisted artists here.

If you want to know more about the artists or have any questions about the Lumen Prize please contact Charlotte.

About Lumen
Launched in 2012, The Lumen Prize celebrates the very best art created digitally by artists from across the globe. As of Spring 2016, Lumen has staged more than 20 shows around the world taking its annual exhibition all the way from London, to China and the USA.

Lumen’s number one goal remains raising the profile of digital art - that is, anything made using electronic devices, and the artists Lumen support use anything from their personal smartphone or tablet to 3D printers and original coding. The second aim of the prize remains to create more opportunities for digital artists. While this is perhaps an odd goal for an art prize, Lumen has always aimed to be more than just a prize. This has been achieved through Lumen’s endeavor to aid a better understanding of what the term ‘digital art’ actually means. One of the ways Lumen has done this is though its adaptability. In response to the artistic practices of the creatives it supports, Lumen has introduced new prizes for 2016 including Mixed Reality, Games and Web-based art - and what these new categories reveal is just how diverse this exciting genre is.

"The opportunities Lumen creates to cross boundaries, both conceptual and literal, are enormous. We are only just beginning to explore the space created for work beyond the usual art hegemonies."Jonathan Kearney(Postgraduate Programme Director at the University of the Arts London (Camberwell College) & Course Leader for MA Fine Art Digital)

“The Lumen Prize has built a strong international reputation for showcasing some of the most exciting contemporary digital art projects. It is to be commended for supporting both established  and emerging practitioners working at the leading-edge of digital creativity.” Michael Takeo Magruder (2015 Immersive Environments Award Winner)

Shakespeare In Shoreditch Festival 2016

From 20th - 30th April, East London is celebrating The Bard’s historic connection to the neighbourhood together with the 400th anniversary of his death. The festival itself brings together four of the UK’s most engaging playwrights with four of London’s most exciting directors - alongside a programme of workshops, film screenings, and talks.

Kick-starting the programme, a newly formed company of Rude Mechanicals have scheduled a world record-breaking tour of Hackney on a ‘medieval pageant wagon’ from April 8th to 18th – performing in ten days the very 1,000 plays written by playwright Annie Jenkins across the ten days of the inaugural festival.

Launching on April 20th, the festival itself is centred around the theme of Storms – and is headlined by four radical reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s plays by four of the UK’s most engaging playwrights (Lulu Raczka, David Watson, Amy Rosenthal, Charlene James) and helmed by four of London’s most exciting directors (Robyn Winfield-Smith, Emma Baggott, Kay Michael, Hannah Bannister).

Written and developed in Shoreditch, the newly-commissioned works all aim to build a connection between new, younger audiences and the world & works of Shakespeare – recruiting life-long fans and followers along the way.

Meanwhile, at the Festival Hub – here at BL-NK, on Curtain Road - a ten-day programme of workshops, film screenings, and talks invites audiences to take shelter from the storm and share their own stories on A Hackney Story Map.

Future House by Adidas at BL-NK

From Thursday 17 March to Tuesday 22 March 2016, Adidas Originals took over BL-NK to create Future House: six days and nights of live music acts, DJs, expert sessions, sneaker showcase, film screenings, exclusive Q&As, interactive installations, art exhibitions, daily BBQs, talks and meet ups - all in celebration of NMD_, the shoe of a new creative generation.

Adidas have collaborated with everyone - from DJ’s and musicians such as Joey Bada$$, Annie Mac and Wretch32, to like-minded publications such as HYPEBEAST and exciting British new generation artist’s such as a2, Connie Constance, SNE and Nadia Rose.

On Sunday for example, Kano took over Future House with back-to-back sessions, including a Kano live performance, Made In The Manor screening and Q&A with Fraser T Smith, Blue May, Swifta Beater, Mikey J, hosted by Hattie Collins, and DJ sets from Seani B and Elijah & Skilliam. View the full program and line-up over the six days here.

THE SPACE - An otherworldly experience set across two floors

BL-NK is not an average event space. Future House was built to reflect the new and uncompromising creative generation. Each day was curated under a new theme such as ‘under the radar’, ‘past empowers future’ and ‘your future is not mine.’

Set over both floors, the space has been designed to echo the bold and innovative design of the sneaker and the mantra behind it; the past empowers the future.

BL-NK's entrance was converted into a future portal which moved into an overgrown wasteland that hosted the main stage and exhibition. Upstairs, the bar was draped in foliage, tin foil, neon light and graffiti creating a space age mirrored affair with hypnotic kaleidoscopes. Outside, the wasteland continued upwards onto BL-NK terrace with impromptu fire erupting concrete slabs and a daily BBQ.

Its a new generation... Generation Coffee!!

We were delighted to work with our partners La Marzocco UK and host their brilliant annual event Generation Coffee on 12 December....

Demonstrating and celebrating the movement that is the 'third wave coffee generation'.  A movement to produce high-quality coffee and consider coffee as an artisanal rather than just a commodity. This involves improvements at all stages of production, from improving coffee plant growing, harvesting, and processing, to stronger relationships between coffee growers, traders, and roasters, to higher quality and fresh roasting.

The day was full of demonstrations, panel Q&A's, tastings, cupping, great food and of course the best coffee made by the best baristas. Some of the highlights included the SCAE competitions, with the two absolutely worthy winners being:

Dave Jameson for SCAE Coffee In Good Spirits UK

Dhan Tamang  for SCAE Latte Art UK

Thanks to all that attended, and for those that couldn't here is some snapshots and short video produced by La Marzocco - we can't wait for the next instalment!

BL-NK Curtain Road launches with a bang!

A new space to grow business

BL-NK Curtain Road launched this week with a bang – thanks to all those who attended and made it a night of great fun and long overdue catch ups!

For those that couldn’t make it here is a little about the story behind this exciting initiative....

Marking the return of a unique Hackney Council venue created to support, promote and celebrate the local business community and located in the heart of the borough’s creative district, Shoreditch, BL-NK boasts over 4,500 square feet of versatile floor space over three storeys, purpose-built to showcase local businesses across all sectors while providing an affordable space to support small business growth.

BL-NK first emerged in 2013 following the award-winning Hackney House initiative, creating a temporary urban space to support nearby creative and tech companies, helping to nurture ideas and local culture. As a temporary urban space and open for just over year, BL-NK established itself on the Tech City landscape, used by a thriving business community and reflecting one of the most creative, commercial and technological clusters recognised nationally and across the globe.

Now located on Hackney’s Curtain Road, BL-NK is uniquely positioned in the centre of Shoreditch High Street, Old Street and London Liverpool Street train stations. In this prime position, BL-NK is able to cater for east end businesses across all sectors, from tech, creative and fashion, to retail and finance. As a platform to promote local projects to a regional, national and global audience, BL-NK will support businesses with their plans for growth, offering affordable space in a key central location, as a venue for seminars, presentations, meetings and networking while also acting as a launch pad for new projects and initiatives.

Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney, who launched the venue on Wednesday night said: “Hackney Council’s BL-NK venue is purpose-built to support business growth, helping to showcase east London’s broad creative and commercial community while giving entrepreneurs and start-up’s much needed affordable workspace. This fantastic new venue is ideally positioned for businesses to work together while promoting inward investment opportunities. BL-NK reinforces Hackney’s reputation as an outstanding centre of innovation while helping to create opportunities for employment, training and apprenticeships with the introduction of new businesses into the borough.”

The BL-NK venue will be open for five years and is being run at no cost to the taxpayer, funding will be generated by businesses and individuals using the space with any surplus being reinvested back into local business support.

For more information or to find out about using the space, pop in for a coffee or a drink and a chat, visit the website at www.bl-nk.org or drop us an email at info@bl-nk.org

A BL-NK face

While everyone else is enjoying Notting Hill Carnival or making the most of the last the season’s festivals – I hope the weather holds out for you guys – I’ve been beavering away on the front and entrance to BL-NK.  As you will see from the image below, there is no mistaking her now:

BL-NK exterior

That’s what I call kerbside appeal!

Inside is looking good as well and I’m glad to see that my sign-writing skills haven’t deserted me since the last time – albeit that this time is on a much smaller scale – but then the finished product will be a lot to the viewer this time around….

BL-NK Sign

And then there’s the safes…

Safe at BL-NK

The first is finally painted and in position, ready to greet the guests while supporting a sculpture or piece of art created by a local artist or artisan.  Any takers?

I’ll do my best to keep you all up to date as we head beyond the bank holiday and into the final stages before the official launch.
